Lake Trasimeno: its Oasis, its islands, and the Campo del Sole

Along the southeastern shore of Lake Trasimeno lies the La Valle Nature Oasis. Located near the village of San Savino (Magione), one of the many castles around the lake, and nestled within the Trasimeno Regional Park, the Oasis is a paradise for birdwatching and biodiversity, welcoming over 200 species of migratory birds every year.

Equipped with paths and walkways over the lake, small hides for bird observation, an interactive visitor centre where children can also observe bird ringing, and hosting numerous educational activities, it is the ideal destination for families, schools, and curious young explorers.

If you’re staying in the area, it's worth taking the kids on a boat trip to the islands of Trasimeno – Polvese and Maggiore – or visiting the Fishing Museum in San Feliciano where they can learn about the history and traditions of fishing.

In Tuoro sul Trasimeno, don't miss Campo del Sole: a true open-air museum by the lake, hosting works by renowned contemporary artists. A walk through the sculptures can become a fun game for children, sparking their imagination and creativity, perhaps during enjoying a relaxing outdoor picnic.

San Venanzo Volcanological Park and Museum – Discovering the geological and prehistoric history of Umbria

Do your children love volcanoes? The small fortified village of San Venanzo, in the province of Terni, just a short drive from Todi and Orvieto, is the perfect place for you!

Nestled in the green Umbrian hills, the village is home to a magnificent Volcanological Park and Museum.

The San Venanzo Museum is one of only four volcanological museums in Italy, alongside those of Etna, Vesuvius, and Pantelleria.

In addition to evidence of ancient volcanic activity in the area, the museum houses important fossil remains – including a dinosaur egg!

From the museum, an easy trail leads to the park, where visitors can discover the remains of three small volcanoes that were active some 265,000 years ago.

Walking through the park, you’ll observe volcanic cones, craters, lava flows, rare rocks, and minerals. Among them is the famous Venanzite, a volcanic rock with a unique composition found nowhere else the world.

When you hold it in your hand – gray and porous but surprisingly heavy – you might feel like you’re holding Superman’s kryptonite!

The San Venanzo Park lies within the Monte Peglia Biodiversity Reserve: an untouched area of 40,000 hectares rich in flora and fauna – a true paradise for family picnics and nature walks.

Indoor and Outdoor Parks in the Terni Area: Between Art, Science, Archaeological Sites, Underground Cities, and Fossil Forests

The Terni province offers extraordinary experiences that combine nature, science, and fun, both outdoors and indoors.

The Fossil Forest of Dunarobba is one of the most fascinating paleontological sites in the world. Here, you can admire about fifty fossilized trunks of giant conifers dating back between 3 and 2 million years ago. This exceptional site reveals climatic and environmental characteristics from the Pliocene to the Pleistocene, when temperatures were significantly higher than today. At the time, the area was crossed by a large river—the western branch of Lake Tiberino—and its marshy banks contributed to the preservation of the trunks through muddy sediment deposits.

Visiting the forest feels like a journey through Earth's history. Educational workshops in archaeology, geology, and natural sciences are also available, some of which focus on producing scientific-themed video documentaries.

If you prefer an indoor experience, Narni Underground awaits you in Narni, Terni province: a fascinating XIII-century underground complex. Here, you’ll encounter a mix of adventure and learning, with Tibetan bridges, climbing walls, and zip lines. An underground reconstruction, supported by educational panels, illustrates the importance of water in Earth's history and introduces visitors to the beauty of speleology.

For those seeking a journey through art, health, and science, we recommend a stop in San Gemini, one of Italy's most beautiful villages. In the picturesque Parco delle Acque, immersed in greenery, you can taste medicinal waters that spring from the slopes of Mount Torre Maggiore.

Nearby, young visitors can learn while having fun at Geolab, the Earth Sciences museum-laboratory, where through five interactive rooms, they will discover the secrets of Earth's structure, landscape formation, and the geology of Umbria.

To complete the experience, don’t miss a visit to the ancient Roman city of Carsulae: one of the best-preserved archaeological sites in central Italy, offering a true journey back to the imperial era.
