The places of Don Matteo
On the footprints of the priest-detective protagonist of the famous tv series on the air on Rai Uno.
The well-known bike of Don Matteo, the priest detective protagonist of the famous tv-series on the air on Rai Uno, crosses streets of unusual beauty. As background of the priest's feats, there is the historical center of Spoleto with its alleys, splendid churches, its palaces and its suggestive fortress.
The tour we propose you will show you closely the "places of Don Matteo". You can both undertake autonomously a walk through the places of the historical center, and take profit of the guided visit you can take part into, in precise moments of the year, using the Spoleto Card (for information address to the I.A.T. – Tourist Office – of Spoleto).
One of the unmissable places is for sure the Duomo di Spoleto (Spoleto Cathedral) and the Cattedrale di Santa Maria Assunta (Santa Maria Assunta Cathedral). It is one of the principal locations of Don Matteo and it is the place hosting the vicarage, the Carabinieres' barracks and the Parlour. Few meters from the square where the Cathedral raises, you can find Piazza della Signoria (Signoria Square); here you will recognize the places of some Don Matteo 9 episodes and not far from there you will be able to see Palazzo Bufalini (Bufalini Palace): the palace has been used for the external shoots of the Carabinieres' barracks.
Heading towards the Spoleto historical center heart, look for via Fontesca (Fontesca Road): this beautiful alley hosts the houses of Cecchini (Nino Frassica) and of the Tommasi Captain (Simone Montedoro).
And what about the Church of Don Matteo? It is the Basilica di Sant'Eufemia (Saint Eufemia Cathedral) located inside the episcopal palace built on the foundations of the Lombards Dukes previous residence. Few meters from there, you can see the Teatro Caio Melisso (Caio Melisso Theatre) where the prison's parlor was set up.
By taking profit of a visit to the Complesso Monumentale di San Niccolò (Monumental Complex of Saint Nicholas), you can observe closely the near school of Maestre Pie Filippini (Pie Filippini Teachers) that hosted all the scenes filmed in the primary school.
The famous Don Matteo bike rides and the walks with his friend Marshal Cecchini take place along Corso Garibaldi, one of the main streets of the historical center, but also along via dell'Arringo, via delle Mura, via di Visiale and Vicolo della Basilica (Arringo street, Walls street, Visiale street and Cathedral alley). The most suggestive spot, even if a bit outside the historical center, covered by Terence Hill's bike rides, is the Ponte delle Torri (Towers Bridge) leading to the Rocca Albornoziana (Albornoz Fortress), the castle dominating over Spoleto.
