Then, following the typical traditions of central Italy, a true urban agglomeration began to develop, consisting of a few dozen dwellings one on top of the other.  The village became the focal point of a larger settlement scattered along the slopes and the plain of Spoleto.

Around the second half of the 18th century, after an extremely violent earthquake, the castle was gradually abandoned. Indeed, the population built their dwellings outside the walls, using the same stones of those which had been previously destroyed.

The San Cristoforo church, built after the castle, was later dedicated to Santa Maria della Misericordia in honour of a miraculous representation of the Virgin Mary that was inside the church that survived the earthquake without a scratch.
