Ocriculum AD 168 - 2025
From May 30th to June 1st, 2025, the archaeological area of Otricoli will host the eleventh edition of "Ocriculum AD 168". The event brings the Roman city back to life during the time of Emperor Marcus Aurelius, in the year 168 AD, the period to which the martyrdom of the town's patron saint, the tribune Vittore, dates back.
Imagine strolling for an entire weekend through the ancient ruins populated by figures in costume; you can immerse yourself in military customs, discover how young Romans lived, savor ancient recipes, be enchanted by music, dance, and theater, and even witness exciting gladiatorial games.
It will be a unique opportunity to experience Roman history and culture firsthand: you can exchange your euros for aurei, sestertii, and asses to make purchases within the event, explore reconstructions of a military camp and a Roman guard post. A lively market will await you with artisans, pharmacists, and bakers, while the ancient taverns will offer you a taste of the flavors of the past.
There will be no shortage of shows and entertainment, with music, dances, gymnastic performances at the thermal baths, comedies, and pantomimes. In the ancient amphitheater, you can watch simulations of gladiatorial combats and athletic competitions. The activity of the river port on the Tiber will also be re-enacted, along with religious rites, public and private ceremonies, parades of legionaries, and civil processions.
To make the experience even more engaging, costumed guides will accompany you on themed tours, interpreting ancient characters and illustrating the history and monuments of the city through experimental archaeology that will make you feel part of the past.
