La Divina Commedia nell'arte contemporanea

The Divine Comedy in contemporary art – illustrations for the first edition

In occasion of the 750th anniversary of Dante Alighieri's birth, the exhibition "La Divina Commedia nell'arte contemporanea – illustrazioni dell'editio princeps", has opened at the Italian Centre for Contemporary Art in Foligno.

The exhibition brings together the illustrations of 10 contemporary artists who dedicated themselves to reinterpreting the first edition of the celebrated masterpiece, which was printed precisely in Foligno, in 1472.

Each one of them has created their own interpretation of the book cover and the frontispiece of the canticles. Since 2006, ten new editions of the Divine Comedy have been made in this way, using illustrations by the various artists: Omar Galliani, Ivan Theimer, Bruno Ceccobelli, Mimmo Paladino, Giuseppe Gallo, Enzo Cucchi, Piero Pizzi Cannella, Stefano Di Stasio, Marco Tirelli and Sandro Chia. The volumes were then printed in limited edition by the renowned print works "stamperia d'arte romana dei Fratelli Bulla".
