Sanctuary of the Madonna of Mongiovino – Panicale

The Sanctuary of Mongiovino, or the Madonna of Mongiovino, is located a short distance from Panicale (about 7 km) and just below the ancient Castle of Mongiovino.

It was built in 1524 by Rocco da Vicenza to replace an older chapel that housed a miraculous image of the Madonna.

The sanctuary, made of sandstone, has a Greek cross plan and an octagonal dome supported inside by four pillars.

Also noteworthy are the portals of the building, created by Rocco himself, Giuliano da Verona, Bernardino da Siena, and Lorenzo da Carrara.

The interior has a square plan with four chapels at the corners, plus the main chapel that holds the miraculous painting.

Among the notable works are the Deposition from the Cross by Arrigo Fiammingo, a Resurrection by Nicolò Pomarancio, the Coronation of Mary depicted on the dome by Mattia Batini, and other important sacred images, most notably the miraculous one representing the Madonna and Child, dating back to the 14th century.

In addition to the paintings, the stone high altar and the terracotta statues located in the organ's niches, crafted by Bevignate da Perugia and Arrigo Fiammingo, also stand out.

How to reach the property:

You can reach the venue by car. In the area around the structure, there is a courtyard with a dirt and gravel surface that serves as a free parking area for visitors. The recommended parking space for people with disabilities is located in front of the entrance door. The courtyard has slightly sloped side areas, while the central area in front of the door is flat.

Moving around the facility:

The Sanctuary consists of a hall in the shape of a Greek cross on a single level, except for the altar, which is raised by three steps from the nave. The structure has two entrances, one used only for religious functions and the other for visits. The entrance for visitors is equipped with a sloped ramp and a wooden double door with a total opening width of 125 cm (with both doors open). The ramp has a 13% incline and is 1 meter long. Beyond the door, there is a step down, 13 cm high: a removable ramp, 145 cm long and with a 9% incline, is available as needed to overcome it. Inside the hall, there is ample space for movement, and the floor is mostly compact, non-slip terracotta bricks. The nave is furnished with chairs and benches. The altar and the bell tower are not open to the public.

Toilet features:

The toilets are located in a separate building, 18 meters in front of the entrance door used for visits. The entrance door has a sloped ramp with a 2% incline and is 55 cm long, while the passageway is 98 cm wide (with both doors open). After passing through the door, there is a small step down, 5 cm high. The toilet includes a bathroom and an anteroom and is accessible to wheelchair users: lateral access to the toilet is possible; it is equipped with a bidet sprayer and two grab bars, one foldable and one horizontal, next to the toilet.
