Palio della Mannaja 2025
From 4 to 10 August 2025, Pietralunga hosts the 42nd edition of the Palio della Mannaja, an event that commemorates an episode that really took place in 1334. The festival celebrates the memory of Giovanni di Lorenzo d’Arras, a pilgrim on his way to Lucca, who on 11 September of that year was unjustly accused of murder in Pietralunga and sentenced to death. Legend has it that, just before the execution, Giovanni prayed to the Volto Santo of Lucca and, at the moment of decapitation, the axe miraculously turned back, saving his life. The episode is documented in a letter from the podestà Branca de’ Branci and by the axe itself, still preserved in Lucca Cathedral, in the Chapel of the Volto Santo.
During the Palio, the village comes alive with the traditional Historical Parade, medieval shows, fire dances and performances that evoke the atmosphere of the 14th century. Taverns and inns offer dishes inspired by the cuisine of the time, welcoming visitors with ancient flavours and customs. The highlight will be on Sunday 11 August, when the five villages and districts, led by their captains known as Cavalieri de Pratalonga, will compete for the Palio banner in tests of skill and courage that involve the entire community.
