Stage 1
Ferentillo

Ferentillo is a typical medieval village of Lombard origin, divided by the Nera River into two settlements: Matterella and Precetto. These were once strongholds defending the surrounding territory, particularly the Abbey of San Pietro in Valle.
From the Rocca di Precetto, a typical hillside castle, you can enjoy a panoramic view of the valley. In Precetto, inside the crypt of the Church of Santo Stefano, the peculiar Mummy Museum is worth a visit.
In Matterella, you will find the Church of Santa Maria, dating back to the 13th century, which houses frescoes by artists from the Raphael school.

Stage 2
Gabbio - Lorino

Leaving Ferentillo, the route follows a stretch of the ancient mule track, once an important trade crossroads between Spoleto and Monteleone. After about 1,26 km, you will reach the village of Gabbio, an ancient castle, presumably dating back to the 11th-12th century. Now uninhabited, it remains a popular destination for trekking enthusiasts and spiritual tourism. From Gabbio, the route continues uphill to Lorino, a small farming village dominated by a natural rocky outcrop, where a medieval castle, destroyed in the year 1000, once stood. The Church of San Giovanni Evangelista, a late Romanesque building dating from the 13th to 14th century, is worth a visit.

Stage 3
Abbey of San Pietro in Valle

After climbing from Lorino to Forca, at about 820 meters above sea level, the trail descends into the valley to about 360 meters to reach the endpoint of this route: the Abbey of San Pietro in Valle, a true gem nestled in nature. It is one of the iconic landmarks of Valnerina. Built during the Lombard era by Duke Faroaldo II of Spoleto, it later became a mausoleum. Recently restored, the Abbey is now a period residence offering accommodation and dining.
