Palio dei Quartieri 2024
From 5 to 11 August, the Palio dei quartieri (Palio of the quarters ) will be held, a historical commemoration aimed at rediscovering and enhancing the historic centre of Nocera Umbra.
Nocera Umbra goes back in time. The city is divided in two: the Porta Santa Croce quarter, the left part, evokes the 19th century, while the Borgo San Martino quarter, the right part, goes back to the Middle Ages.
Strolling through the alleyways of the historic centre, it will be possible to relive the two eras with figures in period clothing, everyday objects, lighting, workshops of ancient trades and scenes of life in times gone by, as well as theatrical performances, either fixed or itinerant within the centre, that evoke historical facts or re-enact real or verisimilar stories; not forgetting the gastronomic part, with careful research that goes back in time through the eras to recover 19th century and medieval foods and recipes.
The judgement of a special jury will vote on the displays, theatrical animations and period dinners to decree the winner of the Special Prize.
The athletic competitions are one of the most important moments of the historical re-enactment. Athletes from the two districts compete in Dama infedele, a competition divided into two parts: Relay and Portantina. In the Relayette, the athletes compete in sprinting and speed, while the Portantina rewards endurance and celerity, involving the use of a special wooden sedan chair on which one of the athletes sits, carried on the shoulders of his companions.
The winning district receives the symbolic banner of triumph, the Palio.
For this edition, the chosen theme is 'outdoor life, popular festivals and markets', a focus on the crucial role played by Nocera as a transit area for merchants and as a place of stabilisation for numerous commercial activities during two important periods.
