Painting Clouds
From 8 June to 31 August 2024 it will be possible to visit 'Painting Clouds', Alex Urso's solo exhibition curated by Lorenzo Rubini, at the new THEPÒSITO Art Space in Narni Scalo.
The exhibition's research ideally starts from the series Painting Clouds, realised by the artist between 2021 and 2022, and reshapes the space of the new gallery by introducing a new production. In Painting Clouds, the artist addresses the theme of the artist's 'work' in a personal way, understood not as a creative pursuit, but as a livelihood.
The series becomes the basis for analysing, and criticising, the social preconception according to which the artist is still today associated with the romantic and dreamy figure who lives exclusively from his own passion.
In the series on show, Alex Urso takes one photo a day for an entire year: in each shot, the author is intent on 'painting clouds' in the sky. The gesture refers to the period when the artist was painting flat interiors.
The work becomes multi-layered. On the one hand, the simple performative act is linked to the concept of artistic action which, also according to Picasso, must be similar to that of the child who, free of preconceptions, is free and his art pure; on the other hand, it becomes a symbol of the desire to take oneself beyond the limit, a desire to announce one's presence and affirm with certainty one's value as an artist today.
The exhibition, with its strong site-specific layout, becomes an opportunity for the artist to self-analyse his own path, a way of looking in the mirror and assessing what he has achieved to date. At the same time, the personal story is set as an object of reflection for system-wide analysis.
Most of the works in the photographic series are displayed in a linear manner to form a compact grid, in a play of correspondences between inside and outside. The exhibition space is characterised by a series of 'mirroring' sculptures, which refer to that profound concept of looking inside oneself, at the same time reflecting the exhibition itself in a continuous play of viewpoints.
