A masterpiece in Perugia: Amedeo Modigliani, Nu couché

From 1 July to 15 September 2025, Amedeo Modigliani's masterpiece Nu couché (Reclining Nude) will be on display at the Galleria Nazionale dell'Umbria in Perugia, offering for the first time the opportunity to present an in-depth look at the figure and work of the great Leghorn painter, with particular attention to his relationship with antiquity.  The painting, in which the artist portrays a model lying on what appears to be a bed covered by a red drape, refers to the encounter with several cultures: on the one hand, her pose alludes to the Sleeping Venus, painted several times in the Renaissance period, especially in the Venetian context, and on the other hand, her face recovers the essential lines of African sculpture, which Modigliani had the opportunity to admire in Paris in 1907, shortly after his arrival in the French capital.

The exhibition will also include a portrait of the famous merchant Georges Chéron and some of the artist's refined drawings, and will place Modigliani's work in direct comparison with African sculptures that will arrive from the Museum of Civilisations in Rome, in order to analyse the context in which Modigliani moves between Western and non-European traditions. At the same time, the National Gallery of Umbria will host some representations of the Sleeping Venus, both in oil on canvas and in print.
