Piermarini in Milan. The Drawings from Foligno.
From June 20 to November 2, 2025, Palazzo Trinci in Foligno hosts the exhibition “Piermarini in Milan. The Drawings from Foligno”, dedicated to one of the most important Italian architects of the 18th century. The exhibition presents nearly one hundred drawings from the collection held at the Dante Alighieri Municipal Library of Foligno, the birthplace of Giuseppe Piermarini.
After the successful show in Milan at Palazzo Reale, the exhibition offers a rich itinerary tracing the architect’s training between Rome and Naples. A second section focuses on the works he carried out in Lombardy, particularly in Milan, where Piermarini was appointed Royal Imperial Architect and led the urban renewal of the city.
His most famous Milanese projects include Teatro alla Scala, Palazzo Reale, Palazzo Belgioioso, the Royal Villa of Monza, the Academy of Mantua, and the reorganization of the University of Pavia. As a professor at the Academy of Fine Arts of Brera, he helped shape an entire generation of architects.
The initiative aims to strengthen the connection between the places Piermarini worked – Foligno, Milan, Naples, and Rome – with the goal of building a cultural itinerary dedicated to his legacy. At the same time, the Municipality of Foligno offers free guided tours of sites related to the architect, in collaboration with the Umbria Tourist Guides Association.
