Processione del Cristo Morto 2025
On 18th April 2025, the moving Processione del Cristo Morto returns to Gubbio — an ancient Good Friday ritual organised by the Venerabile Confraternita di Santa Croce della Foce.
This evocative representation of Christ’s Passion, unchanged for centuries, begins at dusk from the Church of Santa Croce. The procession is led by hooded members of the brotherhood who sound the battistrangole (wooden clappers) and carry the symbols of the Passion, including the skull representing Golgotha.
The wooden statues of the Dead Christ and the Sorrowful Virgin, precious local artworks, are carried on shoulders through the city’s main streets, accompanied by the moving chant of the Miserere, passed down through oral tradition, while large bonfires are lit along the route.
