Palio dei Terzieri a Città della Pieve 2024
From 12 to 25 August, the 51st edition of the Palio dei Terzieri will take Città della Pieve and its terzieri (Borgo Dentro, Casalino and Castello) back to Renaissance times.
The wide-ranging programme of events, which will colour the alleys and squares of the borgo, will culminate on the final day of Sunday when, after the majestic historical procession, the archers of the three terzieri will compete in the Caccia del Toro (Bull Hunt) at the ‘Campo de li giochi’, where the Palio will be awarded to the new winners.
The procession, the precious costumes worn by the figurants and the allegorical floats that this year will stage the theme of Ovid's Metamorphoses will be the subject of careful scrutiny for the awarding of two prizes: the ‘Masgalano’, destined for the figurant who will be the best in terms of historical relevance, dress and dignity of deportment, and the ‘Valerio Bittarello’ prize, for the best interpretation of the ‘Carro Allegorico’.
This new edition will boast an exceptional jury composed of three leading figures from the Italian cinema/theatre/historical reconstruction scene, namely:
Federico Fioravanti, professional journalist, lecturer and creator and director of the Medieval Festival. Massimo Cantini Parrini, renowned Italian costume designer, Tommaso di Carpegna Falconieri, associate professor of Medieval History at the University of Urbino.
During the days of the festival, it will be possible to enjoy performances in the squares and itinerant shows with fire-breathers, drummers and jugglers, puppets, historical re-enactments, craft markets and, above all, to taste, in the three taverns of the Terzieri, the best traditional dishes served in costume and cooked respecting the flavours of the past. Famous are the ‘Lumache al pizzico’ of the Casalino, the ‘Stinco dell'arciere’ of the Borgo Dentro, the ‘Gnocchi del Priore’ of the Castello and many more, in a setting that will give guests a dip into the past.
