Afro Burri Capogrossi. Alfabeto senza parole 2025
From 18th April to 6th July 2025, Palazzo della Penna – Centre for Contemporary Arts in Perugia will host Afro Burri Capogrossi. Alfabeto senza parole, an exhibition that brings together three central figures of Italian Art Informel: Afro Basaldella, Alberto Burri and Giuseppe Capogrossi. Featuring over one hundred works, the exhibition traces the crucial transition from figuration to abstraction in post-war Italian art.
Paintings, works on paper, archival materials, catalogues, magazines and artist’s books – many previously unseen – document parallel yet highly individual artistic paths, united by a similar chronological shift and by their shared presence in the vibrant Roman art scene of the 1950s. Afro, Burri and Capogrossi each developed an original visual language, internationally oriented, reworking French and American models into new visual alphabets: Afro’s abstract gesturalism, Burri’s material experimentation, and Capogrossi’s modular signs.
The exhibition also features a section dedicated to drawing and the creative process, offering an in-depth look at the conceptual stages of their work.
The exhibition catalogue, published by Magonza, includes essays and critical texts that expand on the role of these three artists in the context of twentieth-century Italian art.
