"Canova: Grace and Beauty"

Canova, the big protagonist of the neoclassical art, is arriving in Spoleto: from the 26th of June to the 2nd of October 2016 the exhibition spaces of the MAG MetaMorfosi Art Gallery are hosting the exhibition "Canova. Grace and Beauty".

This is an accurate selection of artworks, thirty-one drawings, monochrome works, engravings and plasters, that tell the planning and ideation moments, completed by a collection of handwritten letters proving the link between the Venetian artist and Umbria.

Drawings have been chosen among more than 1876 ones included in the ten albums and the eight notebooks of the artist and together with monochrome works, engravings and plasters, they represent an ideal corpus for introducing the large public to the planning ideas of Canova.

Eleven of the letters in the exhibition, instead, are coming from the Civic Museum of Bassano del Grappa and document the tight relationship between the sculptor and intellectuals, artists, men with a great civilian and religious power in the Umbrian territory. The other letters come from the Civic Library of Spoleto, and highlight the correspondence with Pietro Fontana (Spoleto 1775 – 1854), politician and art scholar of Spoleto, many times city's standard-bearer, and reveal the big esteem and friendship existing between the two.
