The journey begins in Arrone, a small medieval village perched on a rocky hill along the left bank of the river Nera. The village takes its name from a noble Roman family (the Arroni) who, at the end of the 9th century, built a fortified castle here, the original nucleus of the settlement. Arrone is divided into two parts: the “Terra”, with its ancient defensive walls and narrow alleys, and the “Santa Maria” district, where the church of Santa Maria Assunta (15th century) is located.

From the centre of Arrone, take Via della Villa to join the path leading up to Mount Arrone. The climb is not too demanding and, once you reach the summit, you will be rewarded with a breathtaking view over the Valnerina. Here, at the end of the 19th century, archaeological artefacts such as bronze statuettes and a marble head of a female divinity were found, evidence of the area's historical importance since Roman times.

After admiring the panoramic views from Mount Arrone, the route descends towards the locality of Valle, then climbs up again along the slopes of Mount Tripozzo, amidst centuries-old olive groves and lush woodland. The landscape is a blend of Mediterranean scrub and unspoilt nature, with views that look like they’ve been painted.

Continuing along the path, you’ll reach the Fonte di San Lorenzo (m. 485 a.s.l.), a place steeped in history and charm. Nearby are the remains of an ancient mill, evidence of human activity linked to the cultivation of olives, a tradition that dates back to Roman times. A site of great historical, anthropological and cultural interest.

The route ends in the rural village of Tripozzo (581 m a.s.l.), a hamlet of Arrone, located halfway up the slopes of Mount Tripozzo. This small village, once nearly abandoned, has been partly restored. From here, you can enjoy sweeping views over the Valnerina, with Montefranco in the distance and stretches of oak woods and pine forests all around.

Option: continue to “Lu Spiazzu”

For the more adventurous, the route can be extended to “Lu Spiazzu” (625 metres above sea level), where you’ll find the remains of the cableway from the former lignite mine, an interesting example of industrial archaeology.
