Camera Oscura: Mario Giacomelli. Papaveri rossi 2025

From 15 October 2025 to 6 April 2026, the Galleria Nazionale dell’Umbria in Perugia presents Mario Giacomelli. Papaveri rossi, an exhibition curated by Alessandro Sarteanesi as part of Camera Oscura, the museum’s space dedicated to photography. The show celebrates the centenary of the great Italian photographer, exploring his poetic sensibility and expressive freedom.

The exhibition features five previously unseen works created in the 1960s on the plateaus of Colfiorito and Castelluccio di Norcia, along with a selection of abstract works from the same period that reveal Giacomelli’s distinctive dialogue between landscape and colour. The display concludes with one of his most iconic images, the famous “priests”, presented here in a rare colour version dedicated to Alberto Burri.

The exhibition also highlights the human and artistic bond between Giacomelli and Burri, two leading figures in post-war Italian art, united by their exploration of Informalism and by a deep mutual admiration.
