National Celebration of St. Francis, patron of Italy

National Celebration of St. Francis, patron of Italy

As every year Assisi pays tribute to St. Francis with meetings, celebrations and events which, already during the preceding days, recall the figure of the patron saint of Italy.

The symbolic places of Franciscanism are going to host again the usual initiatives, such as the awarding of the “Silver Rose” prize, the pilgrimage to the Transit Chapel and the third edition of the night march for young people: “8500 steps... together with Francis towards the Holy Land”, on the 30th September and 1st October from the Papal Basilica of St. Maria degli Angeli (Porziuncola) to the St. Francis Basilica.

The heart of the celebrations will be the Solemn Mass on the 4th October, broadcast live on national television, and the traditional lighting of the “Italian Towns’ Votive Lamp”, and this year the Liguria Region will offer the oil.
