Majolica. From the lusterware to the stained: Raphael and the new majolica

In the context of the celebrations dedicated to Raphael, the Foundation CariPerugia Arte is organizing from 11th September to 6th January 2021 in Gubbio, into the Lodges Tanners of the Wool, the exposition “From the lusterware to the stained: Raphael and the new majolica”.
Not everyone knows that the beauty and the delicacy of Raphael Sanzio’s works, a Renaissance genius and one of the greatest artists of all time, just like occurred for his great master the Perugino, they have been a great source of inspiration for pottery, which had and still has in Umbria one of the highest elected areas.

This exhibition, edited by the two leading experts of the matter at international level as Giulio Busti and Franco Cocchi with the cooperation of Luca Pesante and Ettore Sannipoli, it is focused on lusterware pottery production, one of the most important phenomena in the Renaissance arts, and it illustrates through several multimedia devices and the setting up of one hundred and forty works, the characteristics and the rapid transition from the lusterware production to the stained one with particular reference to the reproduction from the engravings and prints of Raphael’s works and other painters at the time. In addition a section will be dedicated to the evolution of taste about collecting and to the reproductions of historicist stamp among the Eighteenth and the Nineteenth century.  

From the last quarter of the XV century until the first decades of the next century the lusterware majolica represented the excellence of Italian potters masters, in particular of those from the two little Umbrian towns of Deruta and Gubbio. Quickly, beginning in the early XVI century, it emerged a new type that the modern pottery literature includes in the stained, strongly influenced by the painting of Raphael Sanzio and favored by the wide diffusion of Marcantonio Raimondi’s prints which reproduced drawings and works, making easily accessible the paintings by the Urbino master otherwise hardly approachable. 

Towards the second decade of the XVI century, the new trend of the “figurative” pottery with evocative scenes of myths, deeds or of biblical scenes supplanted those of the lusterware, or majolica according to the old name.

Witnesses of the transition were the workshops of Gubbio, particularly that one of Mastro Giorgio Andreoli, who still by the 1930s of the Fifteenth century did append the lusterware on stained Urbino dishes.

This exhibition project is divided into four sections: “Deruta, Perugino, Pinturicchio and the pots that seem to be golden”, which illustrates the Deruta production of the second half of the Fifteenth century and the relationship with the contemporary Umbrian painting; “Mastro Giorgio ended up de majolica”, focused on the Mastro Giorgio Andreoli’s activity, who became famous to apply golden and ruby lusterwares on the majolica, and of his workshop between the Fifteenth and Sixteenth century; “Raphael and the stained”, which through a selection of several works belonging to the Collection of Renaissance Majolica of the Foundation Perugia Savings Bank does illustrate the Raphael’s influence on pottery changing and of the stained style affirmation during the early Sixteenth century; “The cabinet of curiosities and of marvels” which does ideally reproduce a room of art collections and pottery curiosities, back in vogue between the Nineteenth and the Twentieth century as a historicist continuation, since Renaissance, of those who did find a place in the real and noble dwellings of scientists and of distinguished men and authorities.

This exhibition of great visual impact does include fifty five works inspired to the Raphael’s imagery.  

This path is completed with some video projections, among which that one of the exhibition “Majolica. Gold and ruby Lusterwares from the Renaissance to the present” always prepared by the Foundation CariPerugia Arte at Assisi in 2019.
This initiative will also be occasion for deepening through a webinar program, collateral to this exhibition, with many experts in comparison on the topic of Raphael’s influence on the Italian and European pottery.
