Solemnity of the Forgiveness in Assisi

Solemnity of the Forgiveness in Assisi

The Forgiveness of Assisi is one of the most important and attended religious events in Umbria.

In 1216 St. Francis asked for and obtained from Pope Honorius III the indulgence and, since then, thousands of people, between the first and the second of August, cross the threshold of the Portiuncula to receive grace.

On 29th July it will begin the Triduum in preparation for Forgiveness, while Wednesday 1st August will be the opening day of the Solemnity of Forgiveness with the Solemn Eucharistic Celebration that will end with the Procession of "Opening of Forgiveness", so called because from that moment, that is from 12 pm on 1st August, until midnight on 2nd August, the Plenary Indulgence granted daily to Portiuncula extends to all the parish churches scattered throughout the world, and also to all the Franciscan churches.

On 2nd August it will be possible to participate in the several Eucharistic Celebrations, while the young people of the 38th Franciscan March, coming from all the regions of Italy and from some foreign nations, will cross the door of the Portiuncula after having walked, for over a week, guided by the theme "With a new name".

During the two days of celebration the Basilica will remain open all day to allow pilgrims to approach the Sacrament of Reconciliation.

The Square of the Basilica, instead, will be the location of five events / shows (Gloriosus Francisuc with Michele Placido, Concert of the Russian Symphony Orchestra, Travelling with Mary, Concert of the Forgiveness of the Vatican Gendarmerie Band, the ballet "The Two Ways") that will frame the liturgical Celebrations of the Basilica.
