The Cry of the Creatures by Gino Covilli

From 5 July to 12 October at the Galleria del Cantico di San Damiano in Assisi there will be the exhibition ‘Gino Covili. Il grido delle creature’ an artistic celebration of the Canticle of Brother Francis on its anniversary and in the very place of its composition.

Gino Covili is an artist who decisively marked the 20th century of Italian painting, capable of interpreting without rhetoric human suffering, rebellion against misfortune, tenderness towards the weak and anger against the arrogance of the strong, love for nature, the environment and rural civilisation.

Gino Covili's artistic language had the merit of emphasising, through his peculiar artistic expressionism, the value of land and environment, social justice and fraternity, history and nature. In it, a non-marginal role is played by the investigation of certain social categories of the marginalised and excluded, but also by the evident protagonism of peasant and working-class society, as well as its iconic referent of St. Francis of Assisi.
