Romano Notari Foundation
Crossing the threshold of Romano Notari’s House of Art is like entering a world suspended between reality and dream, light and colour—a place where art is not merely observed, but fully experienced.
Located in the municipality of Campello sul Clitunno, the House of Art is seamlessly integrated into the surrounding Umbrian landscape, amid olive groves, woodlands and the mysterious flow of the renowned Clitunno Springs. The peace and spirituality of the setting permeate the rooms, illuminating the artworks and gently touching the surfaces of the furniture designed by the artist himself.
This is not simply an artist’s studio: it is a total work of art, a space conceived in its entirety by Romano Notari—an extraordinary world in which every detail reflects his artistic vision.
Visitors enter a living, three-dimensional creation, where every room, wall and object expresses the profound relationship between art, life and nature. It is a suspended dimension in which visitors are invited to enter, contemplate and feel, becoming part of the artist’s pictorial and spiritual narrative.
Among original furnishings and carefully selected examples of 1970s and 1980s design, the house preserves the story of a man who transformed his life into a boundless creative journey. Within this space, Notari turned painting into an all-encompassing experience: his works, vibrant colours, daring perspectives and use of light become instruments of introspection and contemplation.
The architecture, design and arrangement of the objects are not merely decorative elements. They form an integral part of the narrative, guiding the gaze towards the invisible, the symbolic and the transcendent.
Romano Notari (Foligno, 1933 – Campello sul Clitunno, 2023) always regarded painting as an inward and spiritual journey. From the visionary figurative works of the 1950s to the final series created in the 2000s, Notari explored the mysteries of life and consciousness, bringing together memory and modernity, reality and dream, matter and transcendence.
His works invite viewers to look beyond appearances, to recognise archetypes and symbols, and to perceive the breath of the soul through colour, light and form.
A visit to the House of Art offers the opportunity to discover paintings that have never been exhibited, browse portfolios of previously unseen drawings and view photographs of the artist, entering a living archive of his artistic research.
The experience is neither hurried nor standardised. Visitors are free to explore at their own pace, with flexibility and no time restrictions, just as the artist would have wished. They may pause in front of a painting, browse through a portfolio of drawings, examine photographs or consult books and catalogues.
The visit combines aesthetic appreciation with intimate discovery, contemplation with storytelling, and art with Notari’s own life.
Visits are further enriched by the presence of Notari’s heirs, who share personal anecdotes, previously untold stories and memories of the artist’s everyday creative life, making the experience even more intimate and memorable.
It is a rare opportunity to discover the man behind the paintings—his motivations, choices and passions, as well as his profound connection with his homeland and with those who shared his living and creative space.
