Stagione Lirica Sperimentale di Spoleto e dell’Umbria 2026
Spoleto and across major theatres in Umbria, from 6 August to 28 September 2026, the 80th season of the Teatro Lirico Sperimentale takes place, featuring four opera productions, a Lied evening and three world premieres. The season opens with Dido and Aeneas by Henry Purcell, presented in a new version integrating additional music composed by Riccardo Panfili, in dialogue with the original score. It continues with the contemporary chamber opera Una promessa infranta by Federico Gardella, based on a libretto by Cecilia Ligorio, exploring themes linked to psychological and narrative traditions. The programme includes The Bald Soprano (La cantatrice calva) by Luciano Chailly, from Ionesco’s text, reinterpreting theatre of the absurd through a complex vocal and instrumental language. Alongside the operatic productions, the Liederabend evening focuses on vocal and piano repertoire and includes the world premiere of the winning composition of the Fondazione Monini Competition. The season concludes with The Elixir of Love (L’elisir d’amore) by Gaetano Donizetti, also presented in a regional tour, combining classical repertoire, new commissions and contemporary experimentation.
