From 28 June to 25 April, at the Rocca Albornoziana in Spoleto, Dario Fo pittore: Le Macchine Teatrali explores the relationship between painting, stage design and theatre in Dario Fo’s work. Curated by Stefano Bertea and Mattea Fo, the exhibition brings together painted backdrops, figures, scenic tapestries, sketches and paintings, showing how visual art was an essential part of Fo’s theatrical practice. At its centre is the idea of the “theatrical machine”, a combination of images, materials and stage devices through which an idea becomes a performance. The works come from four productions created between 1963 and 2014: Isabella, tre caravelle e un cacciaballe, Mamma! I Sanculotti!, Lu Santo Jullare Francesco and La figlia del Papa. The exhibition also highlights the central role of drawing in Fo’s creative process and traces the development of his visual language over more than fifty years. It is part of the celebrations marking the centenary of the birth of the artist, who received the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1997.
