From St. Francis town to that one of the Festival of Two Worlds, a journey that you can cycle dividing it into two easy stages: the first one from Assisi to Bevagna and the second one from Bevagna to Spoleto, in this way you won’t miss anything of the beautiful countryside and villages of Umbria that you will be passing through.

The first stage of this green road takes you from the heart of Assisi to Bevagna, a charming village placed in the Umbrian Valley.

Even if it runs through several populated areas, it is spread over roads with very low traffic, that make the ride pleasant and they will allow you to enjoy the wonderful Umbrian countryside and the Franciscan places in complete peace. The path is completely marked, so it is easy to go the right way.

In this stage there are no altitude difficulties, for which every cyclist can ride it, also by familieswith children;pay particular attention in correspondence of intersections.Almost totally on asphalt, it does have several discontinuity, potholes and humps, for which it is not suitable for roads bikes but perfect for any other kind of bike.

This pleasant path gives you the opportunity to discover in a different way and from new points of viewthe Umbrian valley, going calmly while you enjoy the mood of Assisi, from the Church of St. Niccolò to the Sanctuary of Rivotorto, to the English War Cemetery, to St. Maria degli Angeli, the bank of the Topino River, the center of Cannara up to Bevagna.
If you are well trained, you can start again and reach Spoleto in a single day, riding totally about 50 mostly flat kilometers, otherwise you can stretch a few kilometers and reach the village of Montefalco.

The second stage restarts from Bevagna – bypassing the town along its old walls or entering into the village to go through the beautiful Filippo Silvestri square – and it is totally spread over asphalted bike lane which borders the banks of the Teverone and Maroggia rivers.

This journey, very well marked, is totally flat without difficulty, so this is a good chance to approach the bike also for beginners or for families with children that want to discover Umbria in a slow way. 

This path in fact is flowing slowly along the Umbrian valley, giving us in a few kilometers several unmissable landscapes over villages situated on the slopes of Monti Serano and Brunette (Trevi, Pigge, Campello sul Clitunno) and over Colli Martani, dominated by the shape of Montefalco. Some of these are within easy reach by short detours, on busy roads –in particular pay attention along the freeway SS3-Flaminia.

In just a few flat kilometers you can also reach Bovara with its Church and the XII century St. Pietro Abbey and the Olivo of St. Emiliano, one of the oldest tree of Umbria, the medieval village of Pissignano, the Temple of Clitunno and Clitunno Springs, perfect place to restand to enjoy the peace of this place, the castle of St. Giacomo that deserves a visit.

This journey will end just outside of Spoleto, at the bike grill of the Terminal. From here, by the use of a connection on ordinary roads, you can reach the downtown of Spoleto or the connection of the former railway Spoleto –Norcia.
Who wants to come back to Assisi can use the bus line, paying an extra ticket to load the bike, or the train along the line Spoleto –Assisi checking in advance if you can carry the bike on the coach.

  • Highway A 1 del Sole –Exit Valdichiana up to Perugia, continue to Cesena (E 45) until the exit to Assisi.

For those coming from the South:

  • Highway A 14 Adriatica –Exit Civitanova Marche and continue to Foligno –Perugia until the exit to Assisi.
  • Highway A 1 del Sole –Exit Orte and continue to the E 45 direction Perugia –Cesena until the exit to Assisi.
