Corpus Domini in Orvieto 2026
On 5 and 7 June, Orvieto celebrates Corpus Domini with two historic processions winding through the medieval centre of the city to the Cathedral.
On Friday evening, the Corteo delle Dame opens the celebrations, re-enacting the arrival of noble families summoned by the Podestà for religious and civic events. Around one hundred ladies process towards the Cathedral accompanied by flag-throwers, jugglers and musicians.
On Sunday morning, the Historic Procession — the older of the two — takes place. It features exclusively male participants, honouring the medieval tradition whereby civic offices were held only by men. Around 500 participants in medieval costumes embroidered with gold and silver march in hierarchical groups: the Podestà with his knights, standard-bearers and militias, the noble houses of the surrounding lands with their banners, and the four city quarters — Olmo, Serancia, Corsica and Santa Maria della Stella — with their representatives and insignia. The procession also includes the Mayor, chancellors, trumpeters, flag-throwers and drummers.
The solemnity of 7 June opens at 6.00 a.m. with a Mass celebrated by the Bishop in the Cathedral Basilica of Orvieto, where the Sacred Corporale is displayed.
