Founded in the 11th-12th centuries, the church of S. Maria Maggiore was probably built on the remains of a pagan temple dedicated to Juno and Vesta, the church, later dedicated to the Nativity and then to the Madonna, in 1025 belonged to the Camaldolese abbey of S. Silvestro di Collepino.
