The Teodelapio is located outside the historic center, in front of the Spoleto train station.
The sculpture painted of steel is 18 meters high. It consists of an assemblage of different forms cut and bolted into the metal, has zoomorphic appearance and reminds partly a crown. Calder had not yet decided the name of the sculpture when, during his stay in Spoleto (spring 1962), saw in the hall of his hotel a print depicting the Duke Teodelapio (early seventh century) with a crown to tips and so he decided to call his work that way.
Regarding the sketch, preparatory drawings and some letters are preserved in the Galleria Civica d'Arte Moderna di Spoleto. The sketch was enlarged 27 times in Italsider factories of Savona and the sheets that were obtained were directly mounted and welded in Spoleto square.
