Easter in Città di Castello

Easter in Città di Castello

From religious traditions, bringing back to life ancient but never forgotten habits, to the folklore appointments with the games from the past: all the initiatives to celebrate Easter in the Città di Castello area.

Città di Castello

The procession of the Dead Christ, taking place on the Holy Friday in Città di Castello, has a tradition that has been repeating itself for more than 800 years.

The big "focolo" is going to open the parade involving  drummers, representatives of the arts, the magistrate with soldiers, the captain of the people, the justice and the camp with the soldiers' group, the standard bearer and other figures in period costumes. On this occasion the town's historical centre lights will be switched off and the parade will be illuminated with "living fire".

Montone

Appointment in Montone with the Annunciation of St. Thorn's Donation: on Monday 17th April, in the historical centre, anticipation of the big August's celebration.

In the morning there will be the reading of the "Big standard bearer's Proclamation" and the historical parade; in the afternoon there will be a tribute to the Braccio's court, with a challenge among archers and with medieval games.

The historical re-enactment of the S. Thorn dates back to the 1474 when Carlo Fortebraccio, while he was at the service of the Serenissima Republic of Venice, since he drove back the Turkish who threatened the Venetian coasts, received as a gift a thorn of the crown that pierced the Christ's head that the same Carl gave to the Montone's people.

Pietralunga

Beyond the traditional procession of the Holy Friday, that will take place along the medieval village's streets with the participation of the S. Sacrament's Confraternities in their traditional costumes, in Pietralunga celebrations will go on for Easter with "the Tocciata", an ancient game taking place on the Easter's morning in the village's square. People form a circle, hold in their hands a hard boiled egg and take turns in beating on the opponent's egg: the player who remains with the intact egg goes on with the round, the other one is eliminated.

On Monday 17th April, instead, the schedule includes a guided walk in the Pietralunga's forest with traditional snack in the farmyard with eggs, cured meats and Easter's cakes.

Umbertide

The Holy Friday's Procession, accompanied by the town band, is going to leave from St. Francis' Church at 8.30 pm and will wind through the historical centre's streets.
