The Fascia Olivata is a unique heritage site, the result of the combined work of nature and humankind over the centuries. It is a true cultural landscape, comprising olive groves and villages of inestimable beauty: Assisi, Spello, Trevi, Foligno, Campello and Spoleto. A three-day itinerary exploring a foothill region, cultivated since Etruscan times and closely linked to St Francis, who made the olive tree the universal symbol of peace.

DAY 1

Arrival in Assisi, the Franciscan site par excellence; a visit to the Basilicas of St Francis, which house the saint’s remains and Giotto’s incredible works, is a must. From the centre of the town, a route of around 10 km winds its way to the Hermitage of Le Carceri on the summit of Mount Subasio, a place of meditation for the saint which offers a breathtaking view over the Umbrian valley. Onwards to Spoleto, a stroll through the streets of the town centre, a welcome dinner featuring local specialities, and overnight stay.

DAY 2

Breakfast at the hotel. Near Bovara, a hamlet of Trevi, stands one of Italy’s oldest olive trees, the Sant’Emiliano olive tree. A majestic tree standing 5 metres tall, with a gnarled trunk 9 metres in circumference and estimated to be around 2,000 years old. Visit to the village of Trevi and an old oil mill dating back to the 1600s, where you can admire the ancient millstone that was turned by a donkey and the old presses operated by hand. Lunch featuring typical local produce and an olive oil tasting. In the afternoon, return to Spoleto, followed by a stroll through the streets of the historic centre to admire the cathedral, the ancient palaces, the picturesque Ponte delle Torri and the Rocca di Albornoz, which overlooks the valley. Overnight stay.

DAY 3

Breakfast at the hotel and check-out. Departure for Spello, an enchanting village. Admission to the Villa dei Mosaici, one of Umbria’s most extraordinary archaeological sites: 500 metres of Roman mosaics of rare beauty.
