Dario Fo Pittore: la Bibbia dei Villani 2026/27

From 26 September 2026 to 25 April 2027, in the Sala dell’Arengo of Palazzo dei Consoli in Gubbio, the exhibition Dario Fo pittore: La Bibbia dei Villani presents the cycle of paintings developed from research by Dario Fo and Franca Rame into apocryphal Gospels, popular Bibles and medieval oral traditions. Initially conceived as a theatrical research project and later developed into an independent body of visual work, the project also draws inspiration from the so-called Emperor’s Bible, a 9th-century illuminated manuscript, and from the role of religious imagery in medieval culture. Through painting, Fo offers a narrative that presents a more earthly and popular vision of the divine, drawing on the expressive freedom and language of the jester tradition. Joy, anger, irony and tenderness run through the works, bringing characters, stories and viewpoints rooted in popular culture to the fore. Within the medieval setting of the Sala dell’Arengo, the cycle establishes a dialogue with the architecture of Palazzo dei Consoli and with the theme of the people’s voice, central to Fo’s artistic and theatrical research.
