Campionato Italiano di Ruzzolone 2026
In Collestrada, Perugia, from 28 to 30 August, the 53rd Italian Absolute Ruzzolone Championship will take place, one of the main competitions in the throwing disciplines of the Italian Federation of Traditional Games and Sports (FIGeST). The championship returns to Perugia after five years and will be held at the Treppi sports facility in the historic Collestrada woods, an area that had fallen into disuse and has been restored and made accessible again for the event. Around 600 athletes are expected, representing 50 to 60 clubs from Umbria, Tuscany, the provinces of Rieti and Viterbo, and the provinces of Bologna, Modena and Reggio Emilia. Including referees and accompanying persons, total attendance is expected to reach around one thousand people. Competitions will begin on Saturday 29 August at 8.30 am, with athletes divided into three categories, each competing in individual and doubles events. Ruzzolone is a traditional game derived from the throwing of a wheel of cheese. It is played with a wooden disc measuring 26 centimetres in diameter, 6 centimetres thick and weighing at least 2 kilograms, which is thrown using a cord or freely by hand. The aim is to complete a course with the fewest possible throws, with each subsequent throw starting from the point where the ruzzolone came to rest. The tradition of the game is rooted in Italy’s rural history, with origins dating back to the Etruscan period and later development during the Middle Ages.
