Acquasparta and the Roman ruins of Carsulae

A relaxing day in a lesser-known but very picturesque area of Umbria, ideal to discover by bicycle

Departure point Acquasparta Arrival point Acquasparta Distance 29,5 km Elevation gain 350 m Difficulty easy Surface asphalt Bicycle types road, hybrid, gravel, e-bike To see nearby Fossile di Dunarobba, Acquasparta, Avigliano Umbro, Montecastrilli, Foresta   This proposal starts from Acquasparta, an ancient town that arose near the ruins of the Roman settlement of Carsulae, and touches on the villages of Castel Todino, Montecastrilli and Avigliano Umbro. This is an area lesser-known to tourists, but scenic and picturesque, characterized by small villages and a succession of soft green hills.
The route passes the Fossil forest of Dunarobba, one of the world’s most important paleontological sites, where there are still trunks formed from the original three-million-year-old wood.
The route is not completely flat and is characterized by continuous ups and downs, with the roads often running along the ridge of hills. The gradients, however, are never arduous, making it suitable even for the untrained, as long as they are able to conserve their strength. To visit the Roman ruins of Carsulae, once back in Acquasparta, continue in the direction of San Gemini. It is only a few kilometres, but there is some more climbing to do.... SEE DETAILS ON KOMOOT
