Vini Doc Colli del Trasimeno

Vini Doc Colli del Trasimeno

The Trasimeno Lake, the fourth largest lake in Italy, owes its name to an ancient Etruscan legend which tells of a prince and his love for a nymph. Compared by Lord Byron to a "silver veil", there are countless poets, painters, travellers who over the centuries have been bewitched by its romantic charm.

As you can easily imagine, the controlled designation of origin "Trasimeno" or "Trasimeno Hills" extends mainly around the most important lake basin of peninsular Italy.

It is therefore all that part of the Umbrian territory that was once settled by the Etruscans. In fact, they started the cultivation of the vine in this area.

The conformation of the hills, the small flat area and above all the presence of the lake characterize a micro-climate that makes this territory particularly suitable for the cultivation of vines and olives.

The Road of the Trasimeno Hills covers the municipalities of Castiglione del Lago, Città della Pieve, Corciano, Magione, Paciano, Panicale, Passignano sul Trasimeno, Perugia, Piegaro and Tuoro sul Trasimeno. Here, according to the production regulations, grapes can be grown to obtain excellent white wines and great red wines.

To be precise, the DOC includes four white wines (Dry, Chosen White, Sparkling and Vin Santo), five red wines (Red, Chosen Red, Reserve Red, Sparkling and Novello), one Classic Spumante and then several single-varietal wines (Grechetto, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Gamay, Reserve Merlot, Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon and Reserve Gamay).

Particular attention has been paid to the Gamay: not to be confused with the French black Gamay, this variety that is genetically homologous to Alicante has been cultivated in the Trasimeno area for a long time.
