It used to be called "croco". Today it is a red treasure that then turns yellow: it is saffron, an ancient and fascinating spice. The lands of Città della Pieve are so rich in saffron that they celebrate it for 3 days, from 25th to 27th October.


"Zafferiamo" is the event through which the beautiful town in the province of Perugia celebrates every year its flagship product, proposing it in all its facets.

The event is going to start with gastronomy, of course, where expert chefs will explain to the visitors the secrets for its correct use in the kitchen, offering tasting delicacies with the scents of saffron, and the restaurants of the town will present special theme menus. Instead, in the exhibition market of the excellent products of the territory set up in the historical centre the producers of the Consortium will propose all the varieties of products made using the precious spice: cheeses, cold cuts, ice creams, aperitifs, pizzas and cocktails.

Visitors will discover that from cooking to textiles, painting and cosmetics, the possible uses of saffron are many and have their roots in a distant past, which is why in Città della Pieve the spice is not only an agricultural product: its shades of colour and its scents are intertwined with its history and its art, to the point of representing the essence of the town.

During the three days of "Zafferiamo" there will be workshops for dyeing with the saffron of fabrics and yarns, in addition to the exhibition of lace and embroidery made with the special technique of Punto Perugino. It will be possible to participate in painting workshops with the technique of watercolour to obtain, from the infused saffron, all the shades of red gold, or to admire the collective exhibition of artworks made with the use of saffron. Furthermore, the "Mani in pasta" cooking workshop will allow you to discover all the secrets of handmade pasta with saffron.

On Saturday 26th and Sunday 27th October, on the occasion of the blossoming of the spice, starting at 9.30 a.m. from Piazza Plebiscito, visitors will be accompanied through a path to discover the medieval urban fabric of the city until the new urban saffron garden, created by the producers in the ancient "Seminar Garden". Here experts of the Consortium will explain the characteristics and production techniques and then proceed to the collection of flowers, to the sfioratura (separation of stigmas from flowers) and to the drying of the product. In this way you will be able to learn all the stages ranging from harvesting in the fields to the finished product. 

In short, during the three days of "Zafferiamo", the taste and quality of the products will be intertwined with the history and beauty of Città della Pieve, situated 500 metres above sea level on a hill overlooking the Val di Chiana and Trasimeno.
