Dettaglio guide
Città di Castello is a small Renaissance jewel that already historically had a strong connection with its neighbouring Tuscan region, especially Florence, thanks to the condottiera family Vitelli of Citerna who later settled in Città di Castello.
The Pinacoteca Comunale (Municipal Art Gallery) was housed in its current location when in 1912 Elia Volpi, an internationally renowned painter, restorer and antiquarian from Todi, donated the 16th-century Palazzo Vitelli alla Cannoniera to the City Hall. Built at different times, the building took on its final appearance in the first half of the 16th century and was so named because of its proximity to a foundry or cannon depot. The Palazzo, a noble example of a Renaissance residence, was built for the wedding of Alessandro Vitelli and Angela Paola dei Rossi of San Secondo Parmense. Richly frescoed, it is characterised by the graffito decoration of the façade overlooking the garden executed by Cristofano Gherardi, known as Doceno, based on a design by Vasari.
