Stagione Lirica Sperimentale di Spoleto 2024 78ª Edizione

For the 78th Season of the Experimental Opera Theatre of Spoleto, six new productions, including a world premiere, will enliven the main theaters of Umbria.

"Anita" a one-act opera in eight scenes by Gilberto Cappelli, will debut on August 22, 2024, at the Teatro Caio Melisso in Spoleto. The opera, inspired by the historical figure of Anita Garibaldi, is composed for soprano, baritone, choir, and an ensemble of 18 instrumentalists. Cappelli, winner of the Abbiati Prize in 2001, explores the life of the heroine with expressive intensity and density, focusing on her emotional and political impact.

From August 29 to September 1, 2024, at the Teatro Caio Melisso, "Procedura Penale" by Luciano Chailly and "La Smorfia" by Bruno Bettinelli will be presented. These two comic one-acts, originally premiered in 1959 with librettos by Dino Buzzati and Riccardo Bacchelli, are performed as a diptych, highlighting the imaginative and surreal writing of the composers while showcasing the sophisticated humor of the renowned authors.

From September 6 to 8, 2024 at the Teatro Caio Melisso, "Moschetta e Grullo" and "Eurilla e Beltramme" two Baroque intermezzi by Domenico Sarro, a prominent figure of the Neapolitan School in the early 18th century, will be staged. These short comic pieces, traditionally performed between acts of serious operas, are presented in collaboration with the Centro Pergolesi of the University of Milan, thanks to new critical editions curated by Antonio Dilella, Claudio Toscani, and Benedetta Amelio.

On September 10, 2024, at the Sala Pegasus in Spoleto, the "Liederabend" will take place, an intimate evening dedicated to the Lieder of Schubert, Schumann, Brahms, Strauss, and others. This event offers a poetic and musical journey into the heart of the Lied, expressing with elegance and depth the nuances of the human soul.

Finally, Shakespeare's masterpiece "Macbeth" will be presented from September 17 to 28, 2024, in various Umbrian theaters, including the Teatro Nuovo Gian Carlo Menotti in Spoleto, the Teatro Morlachi in Perugia, the Politeama Clarici in Foligno, the  Teatro degli Illuminati in Città di Castello and the Teatro Comunale in Todi. Conducted by Carlo Palleschi with direction by Luigi Di Gangi and Ugo Giacomazzi, the opera explores the obsession with power through a tragic narrative and fantastical elements, reflecting the protagonists' progressive alienation. Singers from the Experimental Opera Theatre of Spoleto will alternate in various roles during the 12 scheduled performances.
