Palio del Carro
From 12 to 16 August 2024 the Palio del Carro will be staged, a medieval re-enactment in Monteleone d'Orvieto that will take visitors back in time to the fascinating events that characterised the castle from 1300 to 1450.
The event is inspired by the Statute of the Castle of 1407 and involves more than 400 participants recreating the customs and costumes of the time.
On 12 August, it will be the turn of La Sfida (The Challenge), at 10 p.m. in Piazza Bilancini: it will be a unique moment in which the Noble House of the Counts of Montemarte will challenge the Counts of Marsciano for the dispute of the Palio.
This historical event will reach its climax on 16 August at 6 p.m. with the Historical Procession and Palio del Carro, an epic parade that will bring ancient rivalries and centuries-old traditions back to life.
The day will reach its climax at the 'Campo delli Giochi', where the most eagerly awaited competition will take place: the Chariot Race. Six contradaioli from the two respective Houses will compete in an exciting last-second race to win the Palio.
The two Noble Houses of the Counts of Marsciano and Montemarte, who actively participate in the Historical Parade of Monteleone d'Orvieto and the Palio del Carro, are a symbol of the community's deep connection with its agricultural and landed history. These lineages were closely linked to the landed estates in the Orvieto countryside and represent the beating heart of local traditions.
