Hans Hartung - Polyptychs

Hans Hartung - Polyptychs

From the 24th September 2017 to the 7th January 2018 the Umbrian National Gallery in Perugia is going to host an exhibition celebrating Hans Hartung (Leipzig, 1904 - Antibes, 1989), one of the prominent figures of the 1900 European Abstractionism.

The festival presents 40 works on paper and 16 paintings of large dimensions, executed between 1961 and 1988 (six of whom never exhibited before) and displayed in Perugia for the first time all together as a series.

The collection of the Umbrian National Gallery, rich with tables dating from the 13th to the 16th century of authors such as Duccio, Gentile da Fabriano, Beato Angelico, Piero della Francesca, Perugino, many of which originally composed as polyptychs (even if today not always survived in their entirety) represented the occasion to re-discover these artworks of Hartung as an homogeneous core. His ‘polyptychs”, like the ancient ones, have different sequential elements, where pictures present no hierarchy but are just spatially sorted.

The initiative aims at examining the tight bond of Hartung with Italy, dating to the firth half of the century when during his journey in 1926, beyond visiting symbolic cities such as Venice and Florence, he became fascinated by the Sicilian landscapes, particularly by the natural spectacle of Etna and by the temples of the Ancient Great Greece.
