2018 Umbria Jazz: all appointments

The history between Jazz and Umbria was born in the now far 1973 and not in Perugia, as one might think, but in Terni: in the natural theatre of Villalago in Piediluco (TR), the concerts of Aktuala and of the Thad Jones and Mel Lewis’ orchestra, in whose ranks marched a very young and still little known Dee Dee Bridgewater, gave way to an unbreakable bond.

At that time no one could imagine how much the Festival would have become important on the Italian and international cultural and musical scene: Carlos Santana, Eric Clapton, James Taylor, Miles Davis, Liza Minnelli, Phil Collins, Simply Red, Sting, Prince performed on the stage of the festival; and additionally Pino Daniele, Enrico Rava, Gino Paoli, Paolo Conte and so many others that’s practically impossible to mention them all.

Today Umbria Jazz is one of the most famous festivals in the world for its history, the quality and impressiveness of its program, but also and especially for the fascination of an event deriving from the combination between music and environment the features of an absolutely particular identity.

Umbria is precisely its added value: a festival of such high quality would be also possible elsewhere, but its links with the region and its towns are not easily repeatable.

If one attends the theatres, the squares, the gardens of Perugia, Orvieto or Terni, even who is not familiar with this exceptional music that is jazz, can understand how much all the popular and non-popular music of the last century, owes to it.
