L'atteso ritorno: Raffaello per Monteluce dai Musei Vaticani
Perugia, from October 1, 2025, to January 7, 2026, will host at the Museo del Capitolo della Cattedrale di San Lorenzo the return of the Coronation of the Virgin, one of the most significant works of the young Raphael. Created for the Church of Santa Maria Assunta in Monteluce, the painting was begun by the master from Urbino and completed by his pupils Giulio Romano and Giovan Francesco Penni. The work, preserved in the Vatican Museums, will return to Perugia for the first time since the Napoleonic requisitions of 1797, marking a major event in art history and for the city.
The exhibition will allow visitors to admire the masterpiece alongside the predella with the Stories from the Life of Mary painted by Berto di Giovanni, on loan from the Galleria Nazionale dell’Umbria. This juxtaposition will provide a more complete reading of the original project and the cultural context in which it was created, offering the public a rare and precious overall vision.
The exhibition path will be enriched by in-depth materials illustrating the genesis of the painting, the circumstances of its dispersal, and the role of Raphael’s workshop in defining the pictorial language of the early sixteenth century.
