Carnival in Città di Castello
On Sunday 26th February Città di Castello is going to celebrate Carnival too: the appointment is in Piazza Matteotti, the main city's square, called by the local inhabitants "piazza de sopra" (upper square), with sweets, confetti, music, masks and great cheerfulness.
It will be a day of celebration among big shows, animations for children and traditional delicacies, first and foremost "Castagnole", inevitable in this period, sprinkled with honey or alkermes.
Recipe for castagnole's preparation
800 gr. of flour
8 teaspoons of sugar
40 gr. of warm butter
4 spoons of extra-virgin olive oil
A half grated lemon
1 small cup of mistrà
2 packets of yeast
Mix a half grated lemon with the flour. Beat eggs, sugar and salt. Add flour and knead adding the mistrà. Soften the mixture by adding oil and melted butter. Once all ingredients have been mixed, add yeast and continue to knead for twenty minutes. Leave the dough to rise for about 2 hours, covered with a clot. Fry in plenty of olive oil at a medium and constant temperature. Dress with honey or alkermes.
