After 167 years, la Madonna della Cintola (The belt of the Virgin Mary), the masterpiece by Benozzo Gozzoli, returns to Montefalco, where it was painted in circa 1450  for the altar of the church of  San Fortunato.

The altarpiece will be on display until the 30th April in the Complesso museale di San Francesco, with the exhibition "Benozzo Gozzoli. La Madonna della Cintola", inaugurated on Saturday 18th July.

The piece, kept at the Pinacoteca Vaticana the art gallery at the Vatican Museums, was donated to Pius IX by the community of Montefalco in 1848, on the occasion of being awarded town status.

Painted with tempera on panel, la Madonna della Cintola depicts the belt being given to Saint Thomas the Apostle by Mary during the time of her Assumption to heaven.
